Re: Latin American Commie Dicktaters: Why has the recent diplomatic dust-up with Venezuela and Bolivia been so under-the-radar? I admit I haven't been my news-junky self of late, but I only heard about the recall of ambassadors from Univision -- had to google it to get the official US American MSM version of events. I hope South America doesn't 'splode, Mr. Pedo and I are headed there right after the election for our honeymoon.
  • llyn · 1 year ago
@Pedonator: I hope all goes well with South America all the time but especially for your honeymoon time. I saw something about Bolivia refusing to accept the US ambassadors credentials and our dissing the Bolivian ambassador here? I'm fuzzy on the details but I fear for Evo Morales. I saw his interview with Jon Stewart on The Daily Show and was charmed by him. I was worried for him then, which was some months ago, because the US has been so consistently wicked about intruding into Central and South American government and politics and always on behalf of BIG BUSINESS. Please, dear God, don't let the CIA do to Morales and Bolivia what they did to Chile and Allende.

With the Obama Campaign in Northern New Mexico - Mrs RML reports that Black Eagle hammered home his economic plan today in a localized version of his standard stump speech delivered to thousands of Hispanic, Indian and other voters he'll need from here in November, votes that weren't there for John Kerry and Al Gore in the last two cycles. Today's speech in Espanola, New Mexico (the low rider capital of New Mexico) was the same you've all been seeing on tv the past couple of days with some nods to unemployment among Hispanics and the economic conditions in Indian Country.

Homes winged it without a teleprompter but appeared tired for the 2 pm MDT outdoor rally despite staying in Albuquerque last night. He flubbed the pronunciation on the names of a couple of local dignitaries (they were given to him wrong as well), so he must not have stayed in a Holiday Inn Express. Tha Eagle is now en route to a $2,300 per person/$28,000 host committee fundraiser in Albuquerque 90 minutes away, which one of my partners is attending. (Him: "If I'm gonna max out, I might as well see him." Me: "Damn right." Him: "Damn right.")

Mrs RML spotted Richard Wolfe with the traveling press. Several polls reported today at politicalwire.com show that Obama now has about a seven point lead in New Mexico, pulling ahead of the margin of error here as he is in other battleground states as the economy takes a dive and the bloom falls off the Alaskan rose, leaving only a thorny stem.

Making his pitch to the fickle native New Mexico Hispanic electorate requires an enormous commitment of resources on the part of the campaign, perhaps most crucially the 18 to 20 hours the candidate must spend on the ground for one 90 minute appearance and a fundraiser. The campaign obviously feels it needs the votes and sent Hillz up to the same town about three weeks ago, while Caroline Kennedy was flying below the radar in the Albuquerque-Santa Fe - Taos axis earlier this week at a series of private fundraisers covering the range from $250 to $2300. The voters here feel entitled to an Obama campaign stop, however, and he's promised to return to New Mexico, although I think he'll do a hit and run next time as the clock runs down.

No pix from the rally, although I bet Wolfe does his standup with KO from Albuquerque this evening.

@RML: Great report! We need to see those kinds of poll margins in more states...

@SFL: Oh, I guess I should take a few minutes to make an appointment at city hall. I'm so excited about the honeymoon I've kind of relegated the wedding to "minor detail" status. What can I say, I'm so romantic.

@llyn: From what I gather, Evo expelled the US ambassador claiming he was supporting the riots/uprisings that are happening there, and then pal Chavez followed suit, with particularly colorful language, and at the same time recalled the Venez. amabassador to the US "before he gets kicked out". Seems to be close to zero coverage in the US MSM, which can be read as reassuring, that there isn't a bunch of banging on the wardrums...? Or, it could be sinister, keeping it on the down-low in preparation for an October surprise...?

NPR had mention of this Bolivia/Venezuela business a few days ago, just before I tuned out for a little news-sanity-break. I'm not surprised to find that it's off the 'Murrican radar -- we've got more important things to think about, like hockey moms and slutty, make-up wearing pigs.

The merricun spin I've heard about the B/V dust up:

Bush: You guys aren't holding up your end of the bargain w/r/t the war on drugs, you pushers!

    Bolivia: Fuck you!

    Bush: Get the fuck out!

Bolivia and Venezuela: Gladly - YOU get the fuck out!

    Here's my understanding:

Morales was already trying to crack down on the "low landers" (he's the first indigenous President, from the altiplano) for a land grab or oil/gas grab, when some (spontaneous?) anti-guvmint rioting opened up in the north. These weren't trucked in "europeans" but rather other indigenous peeps, sometimes called "rival gangs". Somehow Bush's brilliant foreign policy experts decided this was a good time to get pissy about non-compliance with the "war on drugs", so Morales said "vete al carajo tio Sam" and booted the Ambassador under suspicion that he was aiding the riots in the north. Chavez in Venezuela had a standing alliance pact with Morales so he booted out the American ambassador in solidarity.

I'm deeply in love with Latin America, and agree that Morales was muy simpatico on the Daily Show, but I've always considered Chavez an ass. Kind of like the Knack to Castro's Beatles.

I am twitchy because I have not done my part in the MAD birthing dept. We are being outbred by dumbasses who ignore or don't recognize that people like Palin and Caligutard are just.that.dumb. They are dumb. They are worse than dumb. They are stupid. Very stupid. And they run things, like federal and state govts. They do things that affect people's lives, and really, they shouldn't. And stupid people vote for them. So, please. Don't do like I did and just replace yourself. Have more babies! Adopt more babies! Teach your children well. (And know they love you.) But please, have more children or this will never end.
